2Feb2009 Genesis 4:10

10 The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.

Sin is noisy! You can’t keep it a secret. Eventually it will come out and others will hear it. In fact, they probably hear it already, but they just don’t understand that what they are hearing is connected to sin. The results of our sins yell. Here in this text we see the results of the first murder. A brother has killed his brother. From the text we can’t tell if Cain had the intention of killing Abel when he called him to go to the field with him. We do know his intentions were not honorable. From his actions we know that his anger got the better of him. Or to say it in a more Biblical way, he let the sin crouching at his door come in and sit in his living room, eating his chips and using his Xbox 360. So the Lord is coming to confront Cain. Cain can’t get away from his sin. Sin must be confronted and dealt with. We can’t sweep it under the carpet. We will trip over the bump in the rug every day. Or maybe we will make a permanent detour around that room, thus eliminating that room from our lives, all to avoid dealing with the stuff under the rug. Sin causes our world to get smaller and smaller. The more we sin, the greater our need to avoid dealing with the sin. So the Lord comes to confront Cain and puts his finger right on the sin of Cain. Notice that the Lord is specific about the sin. The life of Abel, that Cain took and spilled on the ground, is crying out. When we deal with the sin in our lives, we need to be specific. Deal with each sin as the Lord brings it to your attention. Each sin God points out, confess it, and receive forgiveness for it. Just a Cain let his sin guide and direct his actions, so the voice of God can guide us back into fellowship with Himself. Sin leads us away from God’s best and God’s voice leads us to His best. That is why the Scriptures are so important in our lives. They are the voice of God. As we study, listen to their message, God will speak to us personally, helping us deal with our sin and receive reconciliation with Himself.
