3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

Have you been online to check your bank balance lately? I do just about every day. I do it to make sure someone isn’t stealing my identity. Maybe you do it to make sure you don’t bounce a check because things are tight. It is hard living on the financial edge. We lived there for years, always a paycheck away from trouble. We were there not because we had racked up new furniture bills or expensive toys and vehicles. We were there because our income was low. We still have lots of used furniture pieces we were given or we purchased, and only a handful that were new. Can you imagine being able to go online and check you spiritual account? What would the balance be? I have surprising news for you. If you are a Jesus-follower you have resources to meet every true need you have in life. If we are lacking in our spiritual life it is because we have not come to understand the glories contained in this verse. Everything we need for life, both physical and spiritual, is already in our account. We access that provision by getting to know Jesus more fully, more personally, more intimately. It is not through some seminar or DVD teaching set. It is through time spent in the Word and in prayerful communion with Jesus. There is no HOV lane to spiritual growth, no shortcut that avoids all the pain and sorrow. If we want to grow spiritually, we must spend time just like every Jesus-follower has done down through the ages. Just because we have iPods, doesn’t mean we don’t have to spend time studying the Word for ourselves. There are not second-hand benefits either. Each person must go for themselves. If you are lacking, it is because you are not spending the time getting personal with Jesus. As this election has shown, we are drifting as a nation. Are you swimming against the stream?
