Offline Hebrew Vocab Trainer v1.6.097 • Help
Offline Hebrew Vocab Trainer helps you study Biblical Hebrew vocabulary from a workbook data file. It supports three main study modes: Learn, Write, and Game. The app works offline after the page is loaded, and your study progress can be saved and restored with stats files.
Help and Workflow
- Load a workbook with 1. Choose Data File.
- Start in Learn.
- Choose Units: from the dropdown box.
- Toggle Ungraded to "On" when beginning a new set. This begins the scoring process. Grade honestly for the best results. After initial scoring, turn Off.
- Filters and Units: You can limit the active study pool by using Unit filters and other controls on the right side. These filters help you focus on a smaller group of words or widen the pool for broader review. A larger active pool generally makes Game harder because there are more possible wrong answers and more variety in distractors.
- Move to Write when you want active recall.
- Use Game for recognition practice and variation.
- Export stats to save your progress.
File Management
- Use Choose Data File to load your workbook into the trainer. This workbook supplies the Hebrew words and the related fields used throughout the app.
- Use Export Stats to save your current progress, FSRS scores, preferences, and study history.
- Use Import Stats to restore previously saved progress and preferences.
Learn Mode
- Learn is the main flashcard mode. It uses FSRS scheduling to decide which cards should appear and when.
- You can reveal the answer, grade yourself, move forward and backward through cards, and use filters to focus on certain groups of words.
- The Learn card can show: LEMMA, PL, Meaning, Part of Speech, Count.
- Speaker Button
- The Speaker Button in Learn mode plays the audio file for the current word when audio is available.
- Keyboard Controls in Learn mode allow you to flip and grade quickly without using the mouse. See screen for details.
- Learn Actions
- Study Now lets you review cards immediately.
- Focused gives priority to words that need more attention.
- Due Today emphasizes cards that are due based on FSRS scheduling.
- Study Missed helps you revisit cards you have recently struggled with.
- These controls affect which words are available for study and also influence Game prompt selection where noted.
- Ungraded
- Use the Ungraded button when starting a new set of words. This will give you your first scores, which will then provide the best learning sequence. Do not worry about making them all Wrong. That is the normal beginning point. Just be honest, and you will have the best learning.
- Audio
- If the workbook includes an audio filename field, Learn mode can play the matching audio file for the current card.
- Use the Speaker Button on the Learn card to play audio.
- The assigned keyboard shortcut "/" can also trigger playback.
- Audio is currently used in Learn mode only.
- Count
- Count shows how often a word appears in the Old Testament data when that field is present.
- Part of Speech
- Part of Speech helps identify the grammatical role of the word and is also used by Game when selecting distractors.
Write Mode
- Write mode is used for typing the Hebrew word.
- You see the prompt and enter the Hebrew answer. The app checks your entry against the stored answer and lets you learn by recall rather than recognition.
- Write mode uses the same general study system and can contribute FSRS history just like Learn.
- You can show the LEMMA when needed, check your answer, and continue through the selected pool.
- Write Actions
- Study Now lets you review cards immediately.
- Focused gives priority to words that need more attention.
- Review 2 day(s) and Review 3 day(s) let you review cards early.
- Ungraded helps you begin scoring a new set in Write mode.
- Show LEMMA reveals the answer cue when needed.
- Check Answer checks your typed response.
- One last comment: you will need to add a Hebrew Keyboard to your computer. Switch to that keyboard for typing.
Game Mode
- Game mode is a multiple-choice mode built around the arrow keys.
- A Hebrew LEMMA appears in the center of the card. Four meaning choices are placed around it: up, down, left, and right. One is correct and the others are wrong answers.
- Use the arrow keys to choose the meaning that matches the lemma.
- Game uses FSRS scoring for prompt selection only and does not update FSRS scores based on Game answers.
- When you choose the correct answer, the correct elements flash and the app advances to the next card.
- Game Actions
- The Game Actions box explains how Game works and controls distractor behavior.
- Learn Actions Control Filtering means the words available to Game prompts are based on the current Learn filtering rules.
- FSRS prompt selection only / no FSRS score updates means Game follows the learning queue for prompt choice, but your Game answers do not change FSRS ratings.
- All Distractors allows wrong answers to be drawn from the broader distractor pool.
- FSRS Only limits distractor selection to words that already have FSRS scoring history when possible.
- With more words in the Learn pack, the game becomes more difficult because the number of wrong words increases.
- Distractors in Game: Distractors are chosen to make Game more useful and less repetitive. The app prefers distractors that match the Part of Speech of the correct answer. Distractors are shuffled before selection. Duplicate meanings are filtered out before choices are placed. Recently used distractors are deprioritized during the session to reduce repetition. If needed, the app can safely fall back to a broader pool so Game continues to work.
UnGame Mode
- UnGame is the inverse of Game mode — it tests the same vocabulary from the opposite direction.
- An English Meaning appears in the center of the card. Four Hebrew LEMMA choices are placed around it: up, down, left, and right. One is correct and the others are distractors.
- Use the arrow keys to choose the Hebrew word that matches the meaning shown.
- Like Game, UnGame uses FSRS scoring for prompt selection only and does not update FSRS scores based on answers.
- When you choose the correct answer, the correct elements are highlighted and the app advances to the next card.
- Distractors are chosen from the same Part of Speech as the correct answer when possible.
- Filtering, distractor rules, and action controls all follow Game mode — see Game Mode above for details.
Stats and Progress
- The app keeps track of study performance and FSRS-related progress.
- These records help determine review order, due status, focused study needs, and other learning behaviors.
- Export your stats regularly if you want backups.
- Importing a stats file restores your saved study state.
- Show Stats: Reveals detailed per-card and per-session information depending on the current screen.
- Info box: Shows session messages, load/import notes, and other status details.
- FSRS fields: S is Stability, D is Difficulty, last is the most recent review time, due is the next scheduled time, reps is the total review count, and lapses is the miss count.
- Grade counters: g1 / g2 / g3 / g4 track Again / Hard / Good / Easy history. lastG is the most recent grade. lastTs is the time of the most recent grade.
- UID: The stable row identifier. Your stats attach to UID so they can survive resorting and many deck edits.
- In scope vs due: In scope means the card is allowed by the active units and filters. Due means its scheduled review time has arrived or passed.
